Make a refreshing, vibrant drink by combining fresh lemon juice with a homemade blueberry simple syrup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water (for syrup)
  • 1 cup fresh lemon juice (about 4-6 lemons)
  • 3 cups cold water (for mixing)
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon slices and extra blueberries for garnish

Instructions

  1. Make the blueberry simple syrup: Combine blueberries, sugar, and 1 cup of water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely and the mixture simmers. Reduce heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes, crushing the berries lightly with a spoon.
  2. Remove the syrup from the heat and let it steep for 15 minutes.
  3. Strain the syrup through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl, pressing down on the solids to extract all the liquid. Discard the solids. Let the syrup cool completely.
  4. In a large pitcher, combine the cooled blueberry simple syrup, 1 cup of fresh lemon juice, and 3 cups of cold water.
  5. Stir well to combine all ingredients. Taste and adjust sweetness or tartness if needed by adding a little more water or lemon juice.
  6. Serve the lemonade over ice. Garnish each glass with fresh lemon slices and a few whole blueberries.

Notes

  • For a sparkling version, replace 1 cup of the cold water with club soda or sparkling water when serving.
  • You can make the blueberry simple syrup up to one week ahead and store it in the refrigerator.
  • If you prefer a thicker texture, blend the steeped berries with the syrup before straining.
