Follow this recipe to prepare traditional Boston Baked Cod, featuring a simple, flavorful lemon-butter breadcrumb topping baked over flaky white fish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 (6 ounce) cod fillets
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon zest

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Lightly grease a baking dish large enough to hold the cod fillets in a single layer.
  2. Place the cod fillets in the prepared baking dish. Drizzle the olive oil evenly over the fish and sprinkle with lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs, melted butter, dried parsley, garlic powder, and lemon zest. Mix until the crumbs are evenly moistened.
  4. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the top of each cod fillet. Press the topping down lightly.
  5. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the fish is opaque throughout and flakes easily with a fork, and the topping is golden brown.
  6. Remove from the oven and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra richness, you can substitute half of the butter with mayonnaise in the topping mixture.
  • If your cod fillets are very thick (over 1 inch), you may need to increase the baking time by a few minutes.
  • You can add a splash of milk or cream to the baking dish before baking for a moister result, though this is optional.
