Bake thin slices of sweet potato layered in a rich, buttery brown sugar glaze until tender and caramelized. This makes a perfect holiday side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 1/8 inch thick)
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, heavy cream, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth. This is your glaze.
  3. Arrange half of the thinly sliced sweet potatoes in an even layer in the prepared baking dish.
  4. Pour half of the brown sugar glaze evenly over the first layer of potatoes.
  5. Place the remaining sweet potato slices on top of the first layer. Pour the remaining glaze over the top layer. Gently press the potatoes down to submerge them slightly in the liquid.
  6. If using, sprinkle the chopped pecans evenly over the top.
  7. Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 15 to 25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork and the top is bubbly and slightly caramelized.
  10. Let the dish rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For best results, slice the sweet potatoes using a mandoline to keep the thickness consistent.
  • You can prepare the dish up to the point of baking, cover it, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Add 10-15 minutes to the covered baking time if baking directly from the refrigerator.
  • If the top browns too quickly before the potatoes are tender, loosely tent the dish with foil for the remainder of the baking time.
