Make this classic cheddar and herb cheese ball for your next gathering. It is an easy, make-ahead appetizer that pleases crowds.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped pecans or walnuts (for coating)
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried chives
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional coating: 1/4 cup crumbled cooked bacon

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, parsley, chives, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until completely blended.
  2. Shape the cheese mixture into a ball.
  3. If using nuts, spread them on a plate. Roll the cheese ball in the chopped nuts until fully coated. If using bacon, gently press the bacon bits onto the surface.
  4. Wrap the cheese ball tightly in plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or up to 3 days, to allow the flavors to meld and the ball to firm up.
  5. Before serving, place the chilled cheese ball on a serving platter. Surround it with crackers, pretzels, or vegetable sticks for dipping.

Notes

  • You can prepare this cheese ball up to three days ahead of time. Keep it wrapped tightly in the refrigerator.
  • For a different flavor, substitute half the cheddar cheese with Monterey Jack or Gouda.
  • Serve this cold appetizer with sturdy crackers or sliced baguette rounds.
