Follow this simple recipe to make flavorful and satisfying chickpea and sweet potato fritters suitable for frying, baking, or air frying.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large sweet potato (about 1.5 cups cooked and mashed)
  • 1 (15-ounce) can chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free blend)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten (or flax egg for vegan)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
  • Cooking oil for pan-frying or spraying for baking/air frying

Instructions

  1. Cook the sweet potato until very tender. You can boil, steam, or microwave it. Peel and mash until smooth. Let it cool slightly.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the mashed sweet potato, drained chickpeas, flour, onion, garlic, egg, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  3. Use a fork or potato masher to partially mash the chickpeas into the mixture. You want some texture remaining, not a completely smooth paste.
  4. Stir in the chopped cilantro until everything is just combined. The mixture should hold its shape when pressed.
  5. Form the mixture into small patties, about 1/2 inch thick. If the mixture is too wet, add 1 tablespoon more flour at a time until manageable.
  6. For pan-frying: Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook the fritters for 4 to 5 minutes per side until golden brown and heated through.
  7. For baking: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place fritters on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Lightly spray the tops with oil. Bake for 15 minutes, flip, and bake for another 10 minutes until firm.
  8. For air frying: Place fritters in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Spray lightly with oil. Cook at 375°F (190°C) for 10 to 12 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  9. Serve warm with your preferred dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For best binding, chill the formed patties in the refrigerator for 15 minutes before cooking, especially if you are baking or air frying.
  • If you want a gluten-free option, use a gluten-free flour blend or substitute the flour with 1/4 cup of oat flour.
  • For a vegan version, replace the egg with one flax egg (1 tablespoon ground flaxseed mixed with 3 tablespoons water, let sit for 5 minutes).
  • These fritters pair well with a simple yogurt-dill sauce or a spicy sriracha mayo.
