Ingredients
Scale
4 lbs apples (like Gala or Fuji), cored and quartered
1/2 cup water
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
Instructions
Place the apple quarters and water into a large pot.
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the apples are very tender. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Remove the pot from the heat. Stir in the ground cinnamon and nutmeg.
Use an immersion blender or potato masher to reach your desired consistency. For smooth applesauce, blend until completely smooth. For chunky applesauce, mash lightly.
Serve warm or chill completely for a refreshing snack.
Notes
For a naturally sweeter result, use sweeter apple varieties like Fuji or Honeycrisp.
If you prefer a smoother texture, you can peel the apples before cooking, though peeling is not necessary for this stovetop method.
This recipe is excellent for meal prep; homemade applesauce freezes well for up to three months.
If you want a tangier flavor, add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice with the water.
