Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf French bread or challah, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups eggnog
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of ground cloves
  • Butter, for greasing
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Optional: Cranberries or pecans for topping

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves until well combined.
  4. Pour the eggnog mixture slowly and evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to soak the bread.
  5. Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
  6. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Remove the dish from the refrigerator about 30 minutes before baking.
  7. Bake uncovered for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown, and the center is set. A knife inserted near the center should come out clean.
  8. Let the bake rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
  9. Dust generously with powdered sugar and add optional toppings before serving.

Notes

  • For the best texture, use slightly stale bread.
  • You can prepare the entire dish the day before and bake it in the morning.
  • If the top browns too quickly, loosely tent the dish with aluminum foil during the last 15 minutes of baking.
