Ingredients
Scale
1 loaf (1 pound) challah or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
4 large eggs
2 cups eggnog
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter, melted
Optional toppings: powdered sugar, maple syrup, whipped cream
Instructions
Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Spread the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
Pour the eggnog mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to ensure all pieces are moistened.
Cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight.
When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the casserole.
Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed up, golden brown, and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
Serve warm with your favorite toppings.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use a good quality eggnog.
If you don’t have eggnog, you can substitute with milk and add a splash of rum extract or brandy for a similar flavor profile.
Challah or brioche bread works best due to its rich, eggy texture, but French bread can also be used.
Allowing the casserole to soak overnight will result in a more flavorful and moist dish.
