Ingredients

  • Gingerbread Cake: 1 standard 9×13 inch baked and crumbled (store-bought is fine!)
  • Custard: 4 cups prepared vanilla or egg custard (store-bought or homemade)
  • Fresh Berries: 4 cups mixed (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries)
  • Whipped Cream: 2 cups heavy cream, whipped with 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • Spices for dusting: Pinch of ground cinnamon or nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Prepare your gingerbread cake. If baking from scratch, cool completely, then break or crumble it into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Prepare your custard. If using homemade, let it cool to room temperature.
  3. Gather a large glass trifle dish or individual serving glasses.
  4. Start the layering process by placing one-third of the crumbled gingerbread cake on the bottom of the dish. Press down lightly.
  5. Spoon half of the prepared custard evenly over the gingerbread layer.
  6. Scatter one-third of your mixed fresh berries over the custard.
  7. Repeat the layers: Add another layer of gingerbread, followed by the remaining custard.
  8. Top the second custard layer with another layer of berries.
  9. Finish with the final layer of crumbled gingerbread.
  10. Spread the sweetened whipped cream evenly over the top layer.
  11. Decorate the whipped cream with the remaining fresh berries.
  12. Lightly dust the top with cinnamon or nutmeg before serving.
  13. Chill the trifle for at least 2 hours before serving. This lets the flavors meld together.

Notes

  • You can soak the gingerbread pieces lightly with a splash of dark rum or orange juice before layering for extra moisture.
  • For a faster dessert, use high-quality store-bought pound cake instead of gingerbread.
  • Prepare the custard and whip the cream a day ahead to save time.
