- 3 ripe avocados
- 1/2 small white onion, finely chopped
- 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
- 1 small lime, juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional: 1/2 small jalapeño, seeded and minced
- Optional: 1/2 small Roma tomato, seeded and diced
- Cut the avocados in half lengthwise and remove the pits. Scoop the flesh into a medium bowl.
- Add the lime juice immediately to the avocado.
- Use a fork or a potato masher to crush the avocado to your desired consistency. For chunky guacamole, mash lightly. For smooth, mash thoroughly.
- Add the chopped onion, cilantro, salt, and pepper. If using, add the jalapeño and tomato now.
- Mix all ingredients gently until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Taste the guacamole and adjust the salt or lime juice as needed.
- Serve immediately with tortilla chips or use as a topping.
Notes
- Select avocados that yield slightly to gentle pressure for best results.
- To keep guacamole from browning, press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the dip before refrigerating.
- If you prefer a smoother texture, you can blend the avocado and lime juice briefly in a food processor before adding the remaining ingredients.
