Ingredients
Scale
1 cup steel cut oats
3 cups water
1 cup milk (dairy or non-dairy)
1 ripe pear, diced
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
Pinch of salt
Optional toppings: chopped pecans, extra pear slices, maple syrup
Instructions
Combine steel cut oats, water, milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg, allspice, and salt in a medium saucepan.
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
Stir in the diced pear during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
Continue cooking until the oats reach your desired consistency. The oats will thicken as they cool.
Serve hot immediately. Top with your favorite additions like pecans or a drizzle of maple syrup.
Notes
You can prepare this recipe with just water for a dairy-free option, but milk adds creaminess.
For a quicker breakfast, cook the oats fully the night before, cool, and store in the refrigerator. Reheat with a splash of milk in the morning.
Adjust the spice quantities to your personal taste. Sasha likes extra ginger!
Use firm pears so they hold their shape during cooking.
