Assemble this traditional, make-ahead layered salad in a clear bowl for a colorful presentation perfect for parties and potlucks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 head iceberg lettuce, chopped
  • 1 cup frozen peas, thawed
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 hard-boiled eggs, sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup crumbled bacon
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dressing: In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, white vinegar, sugar, and dry mustard powder. Set aside.
  2. Layer the ingredients in a large, clear glass bowl in the following order: half of the lettuce, peas, celery, red onion, half of the eggs, and half of the cheese.
  3. Repeat the layering process with the remaining lettuce, eggs, and cheese.
  4. Sprinkle the crumbled bacon evenly over the top layer.
  5. Spread the prepared creamy dressing over the bacon layer, covering it completely.
  6. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, before serving.
  7. When ready to serve, remove the plastic wrap.

Notes

  • Make this salad up to 24 hours ahead. Covering the dressing layer completely helps prevent the vegetables underneath from wilting.
  • If you prefer a sweeter dressing, increase the sugar slightly.
  • Use a glass bowl to show off the distinct layers.
