Ingredients
Scale
1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 cup long-grain white rice, uncooked
1/2 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup chicken broth
1 cup water
1/2 cup tomato sauce
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground cumin
Instructions
Heat the vegetable oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
Add the uncooked rice to the pan. Stir constantly for 5 to 7 minutes until the rice grains turn light golden brown. This step helps achieve fluffiness.
Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the pan. Cook for 2 minutes until the onion softens.
Pour in the chicken broth, water, tomato sauce, salt, and cumin. Stir once to combine.
Bring the liquid to a boil. Once boiling, immediately reduce the heat to the lowest setting.
Cover the saucepan tightly with a lid. Do not lift the lid during cooking.
Simmer for exactly 18 minutes.
Remove the pan from the heat and let it stand, covered, for an additional 10 minutes. Do not remove the lid during this resting period.
Remove the lid and gently fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
Notes
Toasting the rice until golden brown is key to preventing mushy rice.
Do not lift the lid while the rice simmers or rests; trapped steam cooks the grains evenly.
Use long-grain white rice for the best fluffy results.
