Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750ml) dry red wine
  • 2 ripe Bosc pears, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup brandy
  • 1/4 cup orange juice, fresh squeezed
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3 whole star anise
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 1 orange, sliced

Instructions

  1. Combine the red wine, sliced pears, brandy, orange juice, maple syrup, cinnamon stick, star anise, and cloves in a large pitcher.
  2. Add the orange slices to the mixture.
  3. Stir gently to combine all ingredients.
  4. Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, allowing the spices to infuse the wine.
  5. When ready to serve, stir the sangria again.
  6. Serve the sangria over ice, making sure each glass gets some of the spiced fruit.

Notes

  • Anya suggests using a medium-bodied red wine like Merlot or Zinfandel for the best flavor base.
  • Taste the sangria before serving; add a touch more maple syrup if you prefer it sweeter.
  • You can substitute one of the pears with an apple for varied texture.
