You will create a fiery and fragrant Thai Basil Chicken Stir Fry, inspired by the bold flavors Sasha loves. This recipe brings the heat and the aroma of fresh basil to your table. Get ready for a quick, satisfying, and exciting meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3-5 Thai bird’s eye chilies, sliced (adjust to your preferred heat level)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup holy basil leaves (or sweet basil if holy basil is unavailable)
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional, for richness)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix the chicken pieces with soy sauce, fish sauce, and sugar. Set aside to marinate for 10 minutes.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat until shimmering.
  3. Add the minced garlic and sliced chilies to the hot oil. Stir fry quickly for about 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn the garlic.
  4. Add the marinated chicken to the wok. Spread it into a single layer as much as possible and let it sear for 1-2 minutes before stirring.
  5. Continue to stir fry the chicken until it is mostly cooked through, about 3-4 minutes.
  6. Add the sliced onion and red bell pepper to the wok. Stir fry for another 2 minutes until the vegetables are tender-crisp.
  7. If using, stir in the oyster sauce now.
  8. Remove the wok from the heat. Immediately stir in the fresh basil leaves until they just wilt. The residual heat will cook the basil perfectly.
  9. Serve immediately over steamed jasmine rice.

Notes

  • Sasha always adds extra chilies—feel free to increase the number if you love intense heat.
  • If using sweet basil instead of holy basil, add it right at the end, as sweet basil wilts faster.
  • Make sure your wok is very hot before you start; this ensures a proper stir-fry texture.
