Ingredients
Scale
1 package (10.75 ounces) pound cake or angel food cake, cut into cubes
4 cups heavy whipping cream
1/2 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 pounds fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
1/4 cup strawberry jam or preserves (optional, for drizzling)
Instructions
Prepare the strawberries: Gently toss the sliced strawberries with a tablespoon or two of sugar, letting them macerate for about 15 minutes while you prepare the cream.
Make the whipped cream: In a large bowl, combine the heavy whipping cream, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract. Beat with an electric mixer until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to over-beat.
Assemble the trifle: Choose a large glass trifle bowl. Start with a layer of cake cubes on the bottom.
Add a layer of strawberries over the cake. If using jam, drizzle a small amount over the strawberries.
Top the strawberry layer with a generous layer of whipped cream.
Repeat the layers: Add another layer of cake, followed by strawberries, and then cream.
Finish the trifle with a final layer of whipped cream on top. Decorate the top with remaining strawberries or decorative piping.
Chill the trifle in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving. This allows the cake to soak up some moisture, making it even better.
Notes
You can cut the cake a day ahead of time for easier assembly.
For an extra flavor boost, lightly brush the cake cubes with a little strawberry liqueur or simple syrup before layering.
Sasha suggests tasting the whipped cream and adding more sugar if your strawberries are tart.
This trifle looks best when assembled in a clear bowl so everyone can see the beautiful layers.
