Bake the best homemade dinner rolls that are unbelievably soft, fluffy, and buttery. This classic yeast roll recipe is perfect for any family meal or holiday gathering and tastes far better than store-bought options.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm milk (105-115°F)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened, for brushing
  • 1 tablespoon honey (optional, for Texas Roadhouse style finish)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional, for Texas Roadhouse style finish)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, combine the warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy. This shows your yeast is active.
  2. Mix wet ingredients: Whisk the sugar, egg, and melted butter into the yeast mixture.
  3. Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together 3 cups of the flour and the salt.
  4. Form the dough: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a shaggy dough forms. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface.
  5. Knead: Knead the dough for 6 to 8 minutes, adding the remaining 1/2 cup of flour as needed until the dough is smooth and elastic. You want a soft, slightly tacky dough.
  6. First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size. This step is key for fluffy homemade bread.
  7. Shape the rolls: Gently punch down the dough. Divide it into 12 or 16 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a smooth ball. Place the dough balls close together in a greased 9×13 inch baking pan.
  8. Second Rise: Cover the pan and let the rolls rise again in a warm spot for 30 to 45 minutes, or until puffy.
  9. Bake: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown.
  10. Prepare the butter topping: While the rolls are hot, melt the 1/2 cup of softened butter. If you want the Texas Roadhouse Style Rolls copycat flavor, mix the melted butter with the honey and cinnamon.
  11. Finish: Brush the melted butter mixture generously over the tops of the hot dinner rolls immediately after removing them from the oven. Serve warm for the best soft dinner rolls experience.

Notes

  • For make ahead dinner rolls, you can assemble the rolls in the pan, cover tightly, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before the second rise. Add 5-10 minutes to the final bake time if baking directly from the refrigerator.
  • If you want quick dinner rolls, ensure your kitchen is warm to speed up the rising process.
  • These rolls are excellent served plain, but brushing with garlic butter instead of honey butter makes for great garlic butter rolls recipe variations.
