A detailed, easy-to-follow guide for making moist, classic banana bread from scratch, perfect for first-time bakers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 large very ripe bananas, mashed
  • 1/3 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Grease and flour a standard 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, mash the ripe bananas until mostly smooth.
  3. Stir the melted butter into the mashed bananas.
  4. Add the baking soda and salt to the banana mixture and stir well.
  5. Mix in the sugar, beaten egg, and vanilla extract until just combined.
  6. Add the flour to the wet ingredients. Mix with a spoon only until the flour disappears. Do not overmix the batter.
  7. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared loaf pan.
  8. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before carefully removing it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • Use bananas that are heavily spotted or almost black for the best flavor and moisture.
  • If your oven tends to run hot, check the bread at 45 minutes.
  • For a richer flavor, substitute half of the granulated sugar with packed light brown sugar.
